Rodney McGruder Key Cog In K-State?s New Offense

Feb 26, 2011 5:54 PM

The Wildcats recently installed a five-out motion offense and Rodney McGruder’s versatility has helped ease the transition.

McGruder, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, can shoot the three, finish inside, and clean the glass.

“I think he can play one through five,” teammate Jamar Samuels said.

After watching McGruder score 20 points and grab four rebounds against his Sooners last week, that’s essentially what Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel called him.

“McGruder is the key to their team,” he said.

K-State Thriving In New Offensive Scheme

Feb 24, 2011 10:21 AM

Halfway through the season, Kansas State coach Frank Martin installed a five-out motion offense, which is paying dividends for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats often start the offense by feeding the ball to the high post, and then it begins to look like a version of the triangle offense.

The person who passes it to the elbow then cuts off the ball, giving the post player the option to either hand it off, square up and shoot a jump shot, dribble-drive or pass it back out.

"I felt that was a better-suited offense for us," said Jacob Pullen. "I think it helps us out with our mismatches. It really makes teams pick who they want to guard and spreads out the court so teams can't double me without leaving the open shooter."

Martin said part of the reason for the transition to the new offense was because of his team's youth, which had to learn how to move without the ball in their hands in this motion offense.

Kansas State Rips No. 1 Kansas

Feb 15, 2011 6:24 AM

Kansas State upset new No. 1 Kansas by an impressive score of 84-68 on Monday night in Manhattan, Kansas.

Jacob Pullen scored a career-high 38 points in the wire-to-wire victory.

"I just tried to take good looks, tried to be patient, not overly aggressive but take the shots that were given to me," Pullen said. "My teammates did a good job of keeping them honest so they couldn't overly help."

Pullen's total was just one point shy of the 39 that Elvin Hayes scored for Houston against No. 1 UCLA in 1968, which Kansas State research indicated is the most ever scored in a victory over a top-ranked team.

"Shots were falling for me," Pullen said. "I'll take it if people want to say it was my best game. I felt good how we were playing as a team. Other people were stepping up, creating shots off the dribble."

Kansas State's Kelly Will Face Colorado

Feb 11, 2011 6:19 AM

Kansas State forward Curtis Kelly will play against Colorado on Saturday, according to coach Frank Martin.

The Kansas City Star and the Topeka Capital-Journal, citing unidentified sources, reported this week Kelly had been accused of violating an unspecified department policy and could be subject to dismissal from the team.

When asked to clarify Kelly's situation, Martin said, "What situation?"
